about us

In 1936, Bertha and Aaron Culver opened their home for a prayer meeting in Kankakee, IL. With only 22 charter members, First Church of the Nazarene was born. On November 19, 1939 it was officially organized.

The first building held 120 people and was built in 1940 at the corner of Alma Avenue and Station Street in Kankakee. Within 7 years, the congregation had moved to a new building at the corner of Oak Street and Wildwood Avenue. This building held 450 people.

In 1962, an A-franced building on a 26 acre parcel was built at 1000 N. Entrance Avenue. It had seating for 600 people. This wasn't the end of the growth experience, a circular sanctuary was added to the existing location to seat over 900 people. This is still the current worship site for all who attend First Church.
